The volume presents a scientific harvest of the ”First Non-orthodox School of Nonlinearity & Geometry – Luigi Bianchi Days” (Warsaw, September 21-28,1995).The topics of the school included: classical differential-geometric inspirations to the modern soliton theory – historical achievements (L. Bianchi, G. Darboux) and contemporary developments and applications of soliton mathematics to differential geometry and mathematical physics. The underlying idea of the Non-Orthodox School was to bring together both young newcomers into the field and professionals. Accordingly, the volume contains contributions of two kinds: review lectures and specific reports. It should be read by any physicist or mathematician who wants to see something of (or to enter into) the exciting connections between classical differential geometry and nonlinear systems of mathematical physics. | |||||||||||||||
